Announcing Bit’s new home at bit.dev!

Why? because it’s awesome 😻, and it reflects Bit’s values

Up until now, Bit’s component hub was hosted at bitsrc.io, providing a community home for sharing, discovering and collaborating on components.

With the release of the new .dev domains, Bit joins Slack, GitHub and other great developer platforms in adopting bit.dev as a home for developers.

“ Google Registry is announcing .dev, a brand new top-level domain (TLD) that’s dedicated to developers and technology. We hope .dev will be a new home for you to build your communities, learn the latest tech and showcase your projects” — Google dev blog

Apart from being an awesome domain name😻, bit.dev reflects Bit’s values: Developers-first, Community and Open source. Here’s why.

Developers first

Bit is an open source tool built by developers for developers.

This means that Bit isn’t built as a closed platform or standalone ecosystem. Instead, it’s built with the understanding that a tool for developers must play within the technological landscape that developers work in.

Bit’s mission is to turn components into reusable building blocks. It helps developers easily share, organize and compose components to build apps.

As such, it integrates into the development toolchain, from Git and GitHub to Package managers like Yarn and NPM. It can be extended to work with different technologies, such as popular compilers and testing frameworks.

It’s built to be a playground for developers, where people can easily add new tools and integrations to their favorite workflows and development tools.

We feel that the new bit.dev domain reflects this value, inventing developers to build, extend and integrate Bit and Bit components to build new things.

Community

The open-source community is where the best technologies are built.

A key reason for this reality is the power of the open source community. Collaboration between developers means sharing knowledge and ideas through code. It means imagining and solving problems together.

As the world becomes more driven by technology, it becomes more important to provide the developer community with the tools to share and collaborate.

Bit helps the community collaborate and share code Lego brick we can all use to build our projects. Every developer around the world can take part in the community, discovering and sharing components to build anything.

As Bit lowers the barriers around code-sharing and provides discoverability for components, it increases the amount and quality of the code we share.

In the past year, thousands of teams and developers chose Bit to share open-source components from their projects, so that every developer in the world can find and use them compose new software applications.

The bit.dev domain reflects the value of community, as a home for developers to share and discover components for their apps. Feel free to explore Bit’s community, discover components and share your own with the world.

Open source

Bit is a collaborative open-source technology, where every developer can collaborate and communicate to steer Bit’s development.

We believe that the tools developers work with, like Bit, should be open-source. It’s not just the right thing to do, it means building better software.

Open source tools hold higher development standards, from documentation to stability, security, and compatibility. When you build an open-source tool, you hold yourself to the highest standards of software development.

You also encourage every developer to understand how your software works, and communicate their own ideas through code and words. This helps us understand what developers need, and work together to provide it.

We believe that OSS should be free. Bit’s platform hosts open-source components for free, and forever will. Only by making OSS components freely and publicly available can we help developers collaborate and build together.

We feel that the bit.dev domain reflects this value and aligns to the vision where developers share components to build the software of all our futures.

One last thing

We’re very happy to have this new home for Bit and its community. We think it’s awesome to have a domain name created especially for developers.

We made sure the transition will not affect or change anything for the developers working with Bit. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out and ask. As always, we’re here to help with everything you need.

Hope you enjoy Bit’s new home, which comes alongside Bit’s new design and experience. Feel free to share your thoughts and your components!

Cheers, team Bit 🌹
